How to measure your kitchen

How to measure your kitchen (June 27, 2008)

Measuring is one of the most important steps to creating a successful kitchen design. To avoid problems down the road, it¡¯s important that you take accurate measurements at the start. Follow these guidelines:

• Gather a tape measure and a pencil and paper to record measurements.

• Take your time and record measurements properly. Measure everything twice.

• Round each measurement to the nearest 1/8¡±.

1. Start with the first wall on the left and work to your right around the room. First, measure the overall length of each wall in your kitchen.( A on the picture )

2. Indicate all breaks in walls (windows, doors, closets) by measuring from the corner to the outside edge of the molding. Don¡¯t forget to indicate any permanent appliances, air vents, offsets, etc. ( B on the picture )

3. Measure to center line of plumbing, ducting and outlets. Remember, plumbing and outlets may be moved to accommodate a design. ( C on the picture )

4. Compare measurement ¡°A¡± against the total for measurements ¡°B¡± ¨C they should match. Measure the height of your refrigerator ¨C a tall refrigerator may prevent installing a kitchen cabinet directly above it.
